Counselling
Theory of Person-Centred Counselling This approach views the client as their best own authority on their experience. It views the client as being fully capable of fulfilling their own potential for growth. To achieve this certain favourable conditions are required. These are offered within the therapeutic relationship between client and counsellor. Unconditional positive regard means that you are accepted in a nonjudgmental way. Allowing you to explore all thoughts and feelings, negative and positive free of danger of condemnation or rejection. Empathic understanding conveys to you that I accurately understand your thoughts, feelings and meanings from your perspective. This relates that your view is valued and that you are accepted. Congruence means that I communicate in an authentic and genuine way. When these favourable conditions are active personal development and growth will occur. By strengthening and expanding your own identity enabling you to become independent of the pressures of others to act or think in particular ways,to become the person that you "really are". I believe we know ourselves best, and given the right setting, we are fully capable of fulfilling our own potential for growth. |
